The OLPC XO 2.0 and XO 1.5 laptops will be released in 2010 and 2009, respectively, offering several improvements over the original XO.

One Laptop per Child (OLPC) announced today that work is already underway on a OLPC XO 2.0 laptop computer. Leveraging new advances in technology, the primary goal of the OLPC XO 2.0 will be to advance new concepts of learning as well as to further drive down the cost of the laptop so that it is affordable for volume purchase by developing nations.

Based on feedback from governments, educators and most important, from the children themselves, OLPC is working to lower the cost, power and size of the XO laptop, according to Nicholas Negroponte, founder and chairman of OLPC.

The first generation XO laptop went into production in early November 2007, and there are approximately 600,000 units in deployment in a number of countries including Peru, Uruguay, Mongolia, Haiti, Rwanda, Mexico, Cambodia, Ethiopia, Ghana, Iraq, Afghanistan, and the US and Canada.

Key goals for the OLPC XO 2.0 include an even lower target price of $75 than the original $100 price point, reducing power consumption from 2-4 watts to 1 watt, a new design about half the size of the original XO, and lastly adding a dual-touch sensitive display to enhance the e-book experience. The design provides a right and left page in vertical format, a hinged laptop in horizontal format, and a flat two-screen wide continuous surface that can be used in tablet mode.

Younger children will be able to use simple keyboards to get going, and older children will be able to switch between keyboards customized for applications as well as for multiple languages. The dual-touch display is being designed by Pixel Qi, which was founded in early 2008 by Mary Lou Jepsen, former CTO of OLPC.

Availability of the OLPC XO 2.0 is planned for delivery in 2010. XO 1.5 will be released in the spring of 2009 with the same design as the first generation but with fewer physical parts and at lower cost than XO 1.0.

The Qosmio X305 TOSHIBA

he Toshiba Qosmio X305 was already a high-spec laptop, and at CES 2009 Toshiba announced a new configuration option that takes things a step further. The Toshiba Qosmio X305-Q725 (better write that down) comes with dual hard disk drives. One is a 64GB SSD, the other is a 320GB 7200RPM SATA drive. Presumably, system software and other programs that would benefit from rapid booting would be stored on the SSD, and this could cut down on load times, launch and startup times and even the power drain to the system. That 320GB drive is no slouch, either, and if that weren't enough, the Qosmio X305 also uses the Nvidia GeForce 9800M GTX graphics card, fully loaded with 1GB of dedicated GDDR3 RAM. The 17-inch laptop also includes 4 USB ports, with an eSATA / USB combo, as well as a host of other features already found on the Toshiba Qosmio X305 models. The new configuration is available immediately for $2,700.

Asus Intros Dual Panel Notebook Concept

Asustek (Asus) has unveiled a dual panel notebook concept at 2009 CeBIT in Hannover, Germany.
The company explains that the dual panel concept offers a “flexible working space in which users can adapt to suit their prevailing usage scenarios, for example adjusting the size of the virtual touchpad and keyboard”.
“Through hand gestures, handwriting recognition and multi-touch, users are presented with a control surface that is both flexible and intuitive. Sony VAIO FW Review by Laptop Logic

Sony’s VAIO FW series are all really nice-looking laptops – they bear more than a little resemblance to the latest aluminum MacBook lineup and use the same Intel Centrino 2 CPUs. That’s where the similarities end though. This laptop has a 16.4″ LCD in the 16:10 widescreen format and is clearly built for entertainment, and more specifically watching movies.
Our review sample called FW-270j came with a Blu-Ray player, a reasonably fast 2.26GHz Core 2 Duo (P8400) CPU, integrated Intel graphics, 4GB of DDR2 RAM and lots of ugly stickers. Sure, stickers can be removed, but the fact that Sony decided to paste a “Full HD 1080p” on it is more than a little misleading, as the screen resolution is 1600×900.
Once we got over the sticker annoyance, the FW turned out to be a very pleasant experience. The keyboard and trackpad combination has all the qualities we expect from a VAIO. It also has a set of multimedia buttons, which also provide some added functionality with Sony’s proprietary media software, should you decide to use it.
The FW series is actually available with a dedicated GPU from ATI, which we would recommend as it would offload the processor while watching HD movies. However, our model had to make do with the integrated X4500 Intel chip, and this was reflected in the benchmarks. The Vista Experience Index scores were all high except for the graphics that pulled the score down to a mere 3.8 (the maximum in Vista is 5.9 for some reason known only to Microsoft). Running Futuremark’s PCMark Vantage gave us a score of 3235.
On the other hand the integrated graphics may have contributed to its decent battery performance. In general use the battery lasted more than 3 hours, and we could watch an entire 101 minute Blu-Ray movie on one charge.
To summarize, the Sony VAIO FW can easily be recommended to any movie buff, as it’s both great looking and quite reasonably priced. If you want any form of gaming capability, however, we would recommend picking one of the FWs with dedicated graphics.

Dell Latitude E6400 XFR

I don't know if you managed to see the Jericho TV series, but if you missed it...that's no big loss, after all. Anyway, I am not going to tell you anything about what's happening there, because what made me think about it today is Dell's latest laptop ruggedized to meet military standards and even go a bit beyond, the Latitude E6400 XFR. Just as a side note, there were also some iMacs in Jericho, but let's push it aside now and move to the Latitude XFR, shall we?Oh, yeah, one more thing - in Jericho, there was a guy having a laptop like this one(could have been a Dell too, I can't remember) that was able to withstand an EMP. Now, that you know what made me link Jericho to the Latitude E6400 XFR, let's see the technical specs of this beast:- 14.1-inch display with Direct View technology, optimized to make the screen easily viewable in direct sunlight, by increasing the backlighting and reducing reflectivity, thanks to a special coating.- Intel Core 2 Duo processors, up to 8GB DDR2 RAM, a 64GB SSD option, a six-cell battery offering over five hours of autonomy, but these are nothing out of ordinary...- able to withstand torrential rain at speeds of up to 70 miles per hour, as well as temperatures between -20 and 140 degrees Farenheit- protects against dust and liquid using PrimoSeal technology, which uses compression gaskets.- can handle drops of four feet with the lid closed, and three feet with it open- a lot of other goodies, like 802.11 WiFi Protected Access (WPA), Integrated Smart Card Reader, Trusted Platform Module 1.2 and integrated UPEKTM finger print reader, and so on....
